ANTIGONE

Description

This is a Taiwanese production of the Greek play "Antigone" (by Sophocles).

The script is translated into Taiwanese from both English translation and original Greek script. Thus stage design strives to combine the conventional Greek theatrical form with the Taiwanese visual language, particularly the symbols and images commonly seen in Taoist and Buddhist religious festivals (including masks, bamboo staffs, and red fabric). The progression of the theatrical narration is built upon the visual images that continues to transform itself. For example, the central focus is a sculptural installation which is placed under a tree where poets and story tellers sit to narrates a story, then it is moved by Dionysis worshipers, while dancing, to the center stage, thus transformed into an alter, and at the end it became the death bed of Haemon.

The production is directed by Lu Po-shen, and is produced by the Tainanjen Theatre Troupe in Taiwan.
