ABOUT THE GAME

The first day of THE GAME is July 10, 1957 (my birth date).
The last day of THE GAME is not yet determined (the day I die).

THE GAME explicates the Chinese Yin/Yang theory through a Western use of metaphor.

THE GAME continues to be played even when it's not installed; and whenever it is installed, during the installation, pawns and monarch will be moved on site in responding to the happening of my life. The last day of each exhibition, the positions of pawns and the monarch will be branded onto a small board. The life-size game board represents the present while the small branded boards reflect history.

THE GAME consists of:
  • A LIFE-SIZE GAME BOARD: A hybrid image of Chinese chess and western checker board
    Size: 20' long x 12' wide x 6" high   Material: fiberglass
  • SMALL GAME BOARD (8 in 1991, increases to 11 by 1994): Each surface is branded with the symbols of the Monarch and pawns to show the particular days of which the game is played.
Size: 15" long x10" wide x 1" high   Material: Wood with branded images
  • ONE MONARCH: a self-portrait statue. Both sides are frontal views; one side in a business suit, the other in an evening gown. Wind is blowing hard towards the side wearing the suit.
Size: 18" diameter x 5'2" high life size   Material: Latex, fabric, Styrofoam
  • PAWNS: (number varies) Each pawn carries a symbol of one portion of my life.
Size: 18" diameter x 28" high   Material: Plaster (Stand), Mixed media (Symbol)
  • Text: The rules of the game.

The Game is a game for one person to play alone. The zone of Yin/Yang (the "river") divides the two sides of the chess board. The dark pawn is Yin. The light pawn is Yang. The monarch is Yin/Yang.
