HOLY CROSS ZEN GARDEN Description & Statement The GARDEN is created by residents of Holy Cross College. It embraces the themes of simplicity, humility, vitality, and compassion. A 45' by 42' canvas serves the foundation for the Garden. The representation of water is made of ice cubes and sand, while mountain & rock formations are human-made plastic bottles. Each ice cube is a pebble -- a pebble of life source, water and our individual life. The construction of the Garden is a spiritual exercise. Fourteen performers abide by the purification ritual before the performance, and during the performance, follow a liturgical format of silence accompanied by the sound of meditative chanting block. Once entered the Garden, performers agree not to leave until the Garden construction is fully completed. The full performance time is 5 hours and 10 minutes. Once the ice melts, the Garden turns into a painting, which is divided into twenty 9 feet by 12 feet panels and displayed as wall hangings at the College and in Boston City. |
